Gang of Youths are an Australian alternative rock band from Sydney. I was told about them from a former boss of mine. I feel in love with this song in particular while listening to their newest album Go Further In Lightness.
The song’s lyrics and message resonate with me and made me emotional after hearing it. The song narrates the thoughts of lead singer and songwriter David Le’aupepe’s thoughts during a crisis involving his religious beliefs. Speaking of the writing process of the song David said “I was beginning to become petrified that the God I was instructed to believe in as a child wasn’t really there. You know, I wanted to ask pretty fuckin’ dramatic questions of Him, I suppose.”
Although the lyrics are what affected me the most, the instrumentals in the song are what grabbed my attention in the first place. The song starts with 10 long, held chords before breaking into fast frantic notes from lead guitarist Joji Malani. I’m also a fan of the drumbeat on this song. It’s fast and when combined with Joji’s fast-paced riff it almost gives you a sense of anxiety that I think fits perfectly with the theme of religious crisis.
You might remember this song from my “10 Covers by Famous Musicians and Bands” post when I referenced Nothing But Thieves’ cover of this song. I posted the video in that post if you would like to check it out.
